Abstract :
One limitation in the use of hydrophilic polymers as implantable devices is their inherently poor mechanical strength. Using interp enetra ting polymer networks (IPNs) consisting of both hy drophilic and hydrophobic networks is an effective method to strengthen these polymers. In this work. a series of poly(dimethyl siloxane) / poly(acrylic acid) seq uential IPNs was synthesized and the polymerization kinetics of acrylic acid in the presence of ethylene glycol dimethacry late as the crosslinker was investigated using ampoule polymeriza tion experiments and DSC analysis . The results from conversion measurements revealed the occurrence ofgel effec t during acrylic acid polym erization. The properties of the produced IPNs including swelling, morphological, and mechan ical properti es were also investigat ed.
