Abstract :
The experiment was conducted at Timofeev Vegetable Breeding Station, Russian State Agrarian University during the year 2005-06 to find out the suitable air temperature appropriate time of pollination and location of bud and flower on plant to check the level of self-incompatibility and maximum seed setting through heterogamic bud pollination and autogamic pollination of flowers in cabbage self-incompatible lines under green house conditions. Maximum seed setting (14.2 seeds/ pod) through heterogamic bud pollination took place in the early season inbred line DT-46 at 22°C in the morning (8.00 hrs) followed by mid season inbred line B-21PE-3 (13.6 seeds/ pod). Seed setting at 30°c during noon and at 20°C in the evening was decreased in all studied inbred lines. Highest seed setting (10.2 seeds/ pod) through heterogamic bud pollination in mid season inbred line VB-4PE-1 took place on central branch whereas in B-21PE-3 on first row of branching (14.7 seeds/ pod). The seed setting on second row of branching in both studied lines was decreased because of activeness of s-alleles which leads to self-incompatibility. Through autogamic pollination of flowers the greater seed setting (5.2 seeds/ pod) took place in the mid season inbred line B-21PE-3 at the same temperature and time of pollination and decrease in seed setting was also observed in the similar way. Through autogamic pollination of flowers the higher seed setting on central and first row of branches was because of week self-incompatibility whereas very low seed setting took place due to prevalence of strong self-incompatible s-alleles gene. The most favourable temperature for highest seed setting was found 22°C and appropriate time of pollination was 8.00 hrs in the morning and highest seed setting zone was found central and first row of branches of the plant.
