Abstract :
Solitary cecal diverticulum is one of the true diverticula in the gastrointestinal tract. It is usually asymptomatic; however, clinical findings come forward when it is complicated. The most common complication is diverticulitis. Solitary cecal diverticulum involves the anterior wall of the cecum in one half of cases and often mimics acute appendicitis because of this placement. If the diverticulum settles at the posterior wall of the cecum, an inflammatory mass mimicking malignancy could form. In this article, we present a case presenting solitary cecal diverticulitis mimicking malignancy. Orifice pointing on the solitary cecal diverticulum was determined during a colonoscopy of the patient, who received a diagnosis of appendicitis. However, the surgical procedure was terminated due to regular observation of the appendix in the patient despite a diagnosis of acute appendicitis; a mass was found in the posterior of the cecum, attached to the abdominal wall. Upon persistence of the sample complaint after hospital discharge, a right hemicolectomy was performed on the patient with a diagnosis of and treatment for solitary cecal diverticulitis. A solitary cecal diverticulitis patient with a diagnosis of antibiotic therapy, right hemicolectomy was performed at the request of the same complaints again. The formation of a tumor was not observed in the histopathological examination of the specimen. Solitary cecal diverticulitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with right lower quadrant pain and a mass.
