Abstract
PURPOE: To report viual lo aociated with nitrou oxide anetheia in patient with intraocular perfluoropropane (C3F8) ga.
DEIGN: Obervational cae erie.
METHOD: Three patient are decribed who lot viion in the eye with intraocular ga after ubequent nitrou oxide general anetheia.
REULT: Three patient, aged 75, 80, and 73 year, with intraocular C3F8 ga in three eye underwent nitrou oxide general anetheia in three different medical center for condition unrelated to their ophthalmic urgery, ranging from 10 day to 1 month after their vitreoretinal procedure. All three patient uffered viual lo due to preumed central retinal artery occluion caued by expanion of the intraocular ga by nitrou oxide during general anetheia. In two patient, there wa no recovery of light perception. In one patient, there wa moderate recovery of viion.
CONCLUION: Identification of patient with intraocular ga i critical when planning nitrou oxide anetheia. Thi may be achieved by the ue of a imple intraocular ga identification bracelet iued to patient at the time of their vitreoretinal procedure.
