Abstract :
Purpoe To tet the hypothei that puberty i a rik factor for poorer viual outcome in idiopathic intracranial hypertenion (IIH). Deign Retropective chart review cae erie. Method etting: Tertiary referral center, neuro-ophthalmology unit. patient population: Ninety-ix patient with IIH followed for a minimum of one year. obervation: Age (grouped into prepubertal, pubertal, teenage, or adult), obeity, initial intracranial preure (ICP), meaurement and preence of hypertenion, anemia, or renal failure were correlated with final viual outcome uing χ2, tepwie logitic regreion, and model-election log linear analye. main outcome meaure: Viual outcome wa graded into “excellent” —no evidence of an optic neuropathy or any permanent viual field defect in either eye, “moderate”—evidence of an optic neuropathy and/or a mild (naal contriction) viual field defect, or “poor outcome” (peripheral contriction)— permanent viual field defect. Reult Outcome data were complete for 96 patient. Moderate to poor viual outcome, a oppoed to excellent, wa ignificantly aociated with puberty (P = .007 uing the gender-pecific definition of puberty, .0002 uing the broad definition). Moderate-poor viual outcome occurred in none of even IIH patient of prepubertal age (<9 year), in 15 of 26 patient preenting between nine to 16 year, in two of ix patient aged 17 to 22 year, and in even of 57 adult patient over the age of 23 year. Concluion In thi erie of 96 patient with IIH, viual outcome wa le favorable in pubertal patient than in prepubertal, teenage, and adult patient. We recommend that clinician maintain a high index of awarene when caring for pubecent children with IIH.
