Abstract :
Purpoe
To invetigate the efficacy of intravitreal bevacizumab for treatment of neovacular age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Deign
Propective, open-label, nonrandomized clinical tudy.
Method
ixty patient (60 eye) with ubfoveal choroidal neovacular membrane (CNV) attributable to AMD participated in thi tudy at the American Univerity of Beirut and Hotel Dieu de France Retina Clinic. All leion type were included except for retinal angiomatou proliferation. In the initial treatment phae, intravitreal bevacizumab (2.5 mg/0.1 ml) wa given at baeline, and then two additional monthly injection were given if the macula wa not dry on optical coherence tomography. The criteria for re-injection after the induction phae were preence of new fluid in the macula, increaed central retinal thickne (CRT) at leat 100 μm, lo of at leat five letter of viion with increaed fluid in the macula, new claic CNV or new macular hemorrhage. Main outcome meaure wa the proportion of eye loing <15 letter of viion after 12 month.
Reult
Fifty-one patient (51 eye) completed the 12 month. Mean viual acuity improved from 45.7 letter at baeline to 53.1 letter at 12 month (P = .004), and 47 eye (92.2%) lot <15 letter. Mean CRT decreaed from 327.4 μm at baeline to 227.8 μm at 12 month (P < .001). A mean of 3.4 injection were given over the coure of the tudy, and no ocular or ytemic ide-effect were noted.
Concluion
Eye with neovacular AMD treated with intravitreal bevacizumab over 12 month had ignificant anatomical and functional improvement. Further tudie need to confirm the long-term efficacy of thi treatment.
