Abstract :
Alkylate is an environmentally advantageous petroleum refinery fraction presently available in large volumes. Today, almost all alkylate produced is mixed into petrol for automobiles. This study concludes that it is better to use unmixed alkylate as fuel for small engines, especially two-stroke engines. The main reason is that hydrocarbon emissions from the same quantity of fuel are more than one order of magnitude larger from these engines than from car engines.
Alkylate for small engines has been used in Sweden for several years, and is well established within forestry. Its use in parks, public places, cemetaries, etc. is rapidly increasing.
From a production point of view, prompt introduction of alkylate petrol for most small engines appears to be possible in both Western Europe and the US, without dramatically affecting the pool of petrol for automobiles.
