  • Abstract
The paper explores the consensus conference and illustrates the process of the consensus conference held on “Consumption and Environment”. A basic principle for the work of the Danish Board of Technology (DBT) is that the technology assessment should include the wisdom and experience of ordinary individuals/lay people, integrate the knowledge and tools of experts and respect political processes. This paper discusses which topics are suited for treatment in a consensus conference, and how the consensus conference builds a bridge among members of the public, stakeholders and experts. The result of the consensus conferences is a consensus document that is delivered to decision-makers and the public. The paper discusses what is consensus in the understanding of the DBT and why it is important that the members of the public strive to reach a consensus. This concerns the contribution of the method to the democratic debate and decision-making. Finally, the paper claims the legitimacy of the results of a consensus conference and the participants’ perception of it.
