Abstract :
Historically,theirradiationperformanceofTRISO-coatedgasreactorparticlefuelinGermanyhasbeensuperiortothatintheUS.GermanfuelgenerallyhasdisplayedgasreleasevaluesduringirradiationthreeordersofmagnitudelowerthanUSfuel.Thus,wehavecriticallyexaminedtheTRISO-coatedfuelfabricationprocessesintheUSandGermanyandtheassociatedirradiationdatabasewithagoalofunderstandingwhytheGermanfuelbehavesacceptably,whytheUSfuelhasnotfairedaswell,andwhatprocess/productionparametersimpartthereliableperformancetothisfuelform.ThepostirradiationexaminationresultsarealsoreviewedtoidentifyfailuremechanismsthatmaybethecauseofthepoorerUSirradiationperformance.Thiscomparisonwillhelpdeterminetherolesthatparticlefuelprocess/productattributesandirradiationconditions(burnup,fastneutronfluence,temperature,degreeofacceleration)haveonthebehaviorofthefuelduringirradiationandprovideamorequantitativelinkagebetweenacceptableprocessingparameters,as-fabricatedfuelpropertiesandsubsequentin-reactorperformance.
