Abstract :
Thesolutionsofcrackedelbowareshowntobeexcessivelyconservativeandonoccasion,non-applicabletothecasesforwhichtheyareintended.Theobjectiveoftheworkdescribedinthispaperistousethe3Dnon-linearfiniteelementmethod(FEM)backedupwithexperimentalresultstodeterminethecollapselimitload.Non-linearfiniteelementanalyseswereperformedconsideringbothmaterialandgeometricalnon-linearityusingtheadvancedfractureanalysiscodeWARP3D.VariousalternativemethodsareusedtodetermineplasticcollapseloadsbasedontheFEMcalculatedload–displacementcurves.Thepredictedcollapseloadsarecomparedtocollapseloadsdeterminedbyavailablesolutionsandfinallythesearecomparedtoexperimentalresults.Theworkcanbeconsideredasthesourceofthebenchmarkdatathathelpedtoshapetheengineeringtreatmentofpipingelbowsindesigncodes.
