Formation and Photoluminescence of Zinc Sulfide Nanorods

Zinc sulfide nanorods of wurtzite structure have been grown using a simple sol-gel method via ultrasonication, in the presence of a capping agent. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, low and high resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction techniques have been used to characterize the crystal structure, morphology and growth direction of the obtained nanorods. The possible mechanism of the shape evolution was investigated, which revealed that the crystal growth along the unique c axis resulted in the rod like ZnS. The photoluminescent spectrum of ZnS nanorods exhibited green emission, which may find applications in optoelectronic devices.
