The removal of Crystal violet from aqueous solution by NiFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles treated with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was investigated. The modified magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reaction of a mixture of Ni+2 and Fe+3 ions in aqueous solution by ammonia and then modified with SDS as an ionic surfactant. The morphology of synthesized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was characterized by SEM and TEM. The XRD results confirmed the formation of MNPs with face centered cubic (fcc) structure and the crystallite size was found to be 19 nm. The FTIR spectrums were demonstrated the adsorption of Crystal violet onto synthesized MNPs. The effects of different parameters, such as pH, initial concentration of dye and contact time were studied on the adsorption of Crystal violet onto NiFe2O4–SDS MNPs. The equilibrium data of dye adsorption were well fitted to the Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption kinetic was accommodated by a pseudo–second–order model and the results from Boyd plot indicated that the Crystal violet adsorption onto NiFe2O4–SDS MNPs was controlled by film diffusion.
