A modified ZSM-5 zeolite was prepared using nitric acid treatment of a commercial ZSM-5 zeolite. Some properties of the modified ZSM-5 zeolite such as: surface area, pore volume and Si/Al ratio were studied by BET and ICP. The catalytic performances of the commercial ZSM-5 zeolite and the modified ZSM-5 zeolite were evaluated on a fixed bed reactor at 380 °C, 10 bars pressure, and weight hourly space velocity of feed 3.35 h−1. The results showed that a number of alumina could be removed by treating with nitric acid. The framework Si/Al ratio was improved by using acid leaching and both the meicropore volume and external surface area were enhanced. In m-xylene isomerization reaction, the dealuminated ZSM-5 zeolite obtained by washing with nitric acid exhibited the much higher m-xylene conversion compared to commercial ZSM-5 zeolite. The para/ortho ratio on dealuminated ZSM-5 increased compared to commercial ZSM-5.
