Strong motivation to increase the penetration of renewable energy in microgrids, introduces new challenges for frequency regulation. Application of storage systems impose costs, operating and maintenance problems to the microgrid owners. Moreover, the charge and discharge process of batteries causes reduction in their life time. In this paper the frequency stability of a microgrid with no energy storage system is investigated. In the proposed strategy, the microgrid operates without a storage system and the balance between demand and generation is maintained with dump load controller (DLC). The DLC ensures frequency stability during autonomous mode and minimizes frequency fluctuations in order to provide a good power quality to the customers and keep frequency within its allowed limitation. The performance of the proposed control strategy is studied under different conditions in a microgrid.
