A wet chemical functionalization process of graphene was studied for evaluation of the structural and chemical changes in graphene. It was aimed to investigate the prepared nano structure as heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel production from vegetable oil. In the first step graphene oxide was fabricated from graphite via carrier improved method, and its exfoliation process was carried out by microwave. Finally, the exfoliated sample was reduced and sulfonated, being analyzed by FTIR, XRD. In order to fabricate sulfonic functional groups on the surface of graphene, the functionalization process was carried out by Hamer improved method [1], and its exfoliation was conducted by microwave. Microwave-assisted processes are one of the helpful methods in chemistry of carbon compounds and exhibiting several advantages over the conventional methods in functionalization reactions of carbon nanostructure [2]. Systematic investigation of graphene synthesis reaction and its functionalization was conducted by FTIR spectroscopy. Characterization of the obtained catalyst confirmed the discussion and integrity of the graphene-based structure. Thus it was concluded that the outcome of this research will facilitate the preparation and application of sulfonated graphene as a heterogeneous acid catalyst in biodiesel production, due to sulfonic acid functional groups and it is a suitable catalyst with reasonable capability causing 98% yield
