Study antiparasitic effect of ginger and glycyrrhiza extracts on neospora caninum ( Nc) at cell culture conditions by MTT assay

Objectives: Nc is an apicomplexan protozoan which is similar to toxoplasma gondi morphologically by antigenical is different. This protozoa is the causative agent of neosporosis which results to abortion in cattle. inhibitory effect of ginger on toxoplasma has been reported andglycyrrhiza has also antiparasitic effect.the aim of this study was to stimateapproperizate dose of ginger and glycyrrhizawhich have not adverse effect on vero cells but may have anti-parasitic effect on Nc.Materials Methods: Toxic dose of water extracts of ginger and glycyrrhiza for vero cells were estimated by MTT assay. there after any adverse effect of such nontoxic dose was studied on Nc, for that vero cells were adjusted to 4×105/ml and 100ml was dispatched to each well of 96 wells cell culture plate. Than various amounts of ginger and glycyrrhiza extract (0.5- 0.0625 mg/ml) were added to selected wells. Plate was incubated at 37Ċ in Co2 incubator for 24 hrs.Results Conclusion: Results obtained by MTT as well as visual inspection showed that water extract of ginger at concentration 1.25 mg/ml and glycyrrhiza extract at 2.5 mg/ml did not have adverse effect onvero cells, while ginger effectively had inhibited Nc at cell cultures condition, but glycyrrhiza extract did not show significant inhibitory effect on Nc. To our knowledge this is the first report related to inhibitory effect of ginger extract on Nc at laboratory condition.
