Objective: Bleomycin as a chemotherapy drug can cause pulmonary fibrosis and with increased acute phase proteins it can also cause fibrosis to liver. This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of methimazole and celery extract on liver injury by bleomycin in rats. Material and methods: 30 rats were randomly divided into five groups. Then, bleomycin and normal saline were injected to the control group, and for the first experimental group celery hydro alcoholic extract at at 50mg/kg, and in the second group methimazole 80 mg/kg, for the third group methimazole and celery extract was administered before bleomycin (on day 8). The fourth experimental group was first given bleomycin then methimazole and celery extract were prescribed. The blood was taken from the heart and the concentration of serum AST, ALT, ALP and creatinine was measured. Results: The measured concentration of creatinine, AST, ALT and ALP in the control group (CG) was 0.6±0.1، 201.5±10.2 ، 146.5±7.8 ، 608.5±15.9, in T1 group it was 0.6±0.2، 127±7.5، 28±3.7 ، 382.5±30.4, for the T2 group, 0.7±0.5، 96.5±6.9 ، 31.5±0.8، 443.5±25.7،in the T3 group, it was 0.6±0.5، 123±10.5، 45±7.9 و 390±43.1 and in T4 0.55±0.4، 91±8.2 ، 37±5.5، 363±28.9 respectively. No significant difference between the control group and the experimental groups was observed in creatinine concentration but in AST, ALT and ALP there was a significant difference. (P 0.05).Conclusion: In conclusion, the protective effect of celery extract and methimazole on pulmonary fibrosis and the enzyme decrease of liver damage could be partly associated with the reduction of oxidative damage and inflammatory phase caused by bleomycin.
