Objective: Cabergolineis used to induce oestrus, stopping lactation and induce abortion in small animal medicine. Prescription is limited due to the relative high cost and form of medicine. The specific doses of Vitagnus extract have almost identical properties of cabergoline that reduce prolactin and increase the concentration of FSH hormone.Material and method:In this study, the effect of the Cabergoline and Vitagnus on vaginal cytology changes, prolactin, estradiol and progesterone concentrations were examinedin adult female dogs. Twelve healthy adult cyclic female dogs were selected and randomly aligned in treatment (6 dogs, Vitagnus extract 1.5 ml daily for 5 weeks,80-90mg/ml,PO) and control groups (6 dogs, cabergoline, daily for 5 weeks, 5µg/kg, PO). Blood sampling andvaginal smears were taken weekly. Serum samples stored at -20 ° C untilmeasuring prolactin, estradiol and progesterone using ELISA method. Based on vaginal cytologyresults, four (Cabergoline) and three (Vitagus) dogs were in the estruos phase after 5 weeks of treatment. The average concentration of the prolactin was not differed during five weeks and between two groups (P 0.05). Results: There was not significant different in progesteronelevels between groups and during five weeks of treatment (P 0.05). There was not significant differencesin estradiol concentration between the two groups (P 0.05). The changes of estradiol concentration was significant during the five weeks (P=0.003). The mean concentration of this hormone changedsignificant between weeks 2 and 3 (P=0.01), 2 and 5 (P=0.02) and 3 and 4 (P=0.04). It is accordingto vaginal cytologic results that dogs were in the estrus from third week. As a result, Vitagnus extract had similar hormonal effects as cabergoline for induction of estrus in the bitches. The same as cabergoline, Vitagnus effect depending on the stage of the estrous cycle at the start of treatment.
