Objectives: There are few conventional drugs that can stimulate liver function and offer hepatic protection or help in the regeneration of hepatic cells but they are proved to be hepatotoxic at particular dose. In spite of the presence of known hepatoprotective medicine in the pharmaceutical market, remedies from medicinal plants are used with success to treat this disease. The purpose of this study was determination of hepatoprotective activity of essential oil of Trachyspermum ammi. To our knowledge, this is the first study on hepatoprotective properties of the plant. Materials Methods: We used 30 mice in four groups (Group 1: negative control mice received saline. Group 2: positive control mice received ccl4(1ml/kg, i.p.). Group 3: Treatment mice received receivedessential oil of Trachyspermumammi(200 mg/kg, p.o.). Group 4: Treatment mice received received essential oil of Trachyspermumammi (800 mg/kg, p.o.). Group 5: Treatment mice received received essential oil of Trachyspermumammi (1600 mg/kg, p.o.). The effect of extract on serum biochemistry such as total protein, total bilirubin, urea nitrogen, alkaline phosphatise (ALP) and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) was evaluated. Results Conclusion: The amount of urea nitrogen,ALP, total bilirubin, total protein, and ALTin day 45 that were killedas were as follows: Group 1: 40±3.39, 276.00±92.00, 0.36±0.19, 6.66±1.53, 65.40±36.51. Group 2: 40.25±3.77, 553±351.58, 0.50±0.14, 6.16±0.50, 83.66±49.57. Group 3: 33.50±1.00, 375.75±171.33, 0.37±0.12, 6.77±0.33, 67.75±13.40. Group 4:31.00±2.82, 283.50±58.68, 0.35±0.21, 6.90±0.00, 61.00±60.81. Group 5: 29.00±7.07, 238.50±47.37, 0.34±0.14, 6.95±0.70, 64.00±28.28. As they are seen amount ofnitrogen, ALP, total bilirubin, and ALTreduced in Group 3, 4 and 5 to Group 2 and amount of total protein increased in Group 3, 4 and 5 to Group 1 and 2. In conclusion, our biochemical evaluations suggest the strong hepatoprotective potential of essential oil of Trachyspermum ammi.
