Objectives: Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a member of the Lamiaceae plant family that has antioxidant effects but there are also reports of its toxicity at high doses. The broiler chickens are prone to develop ascites because of high growth rate, which puts high demands on the metabolic processes and on the oxygen demand. The elevated production of reactive oxygen in broilers prone to ascites potentiated the development of the disease or aggravate the disease as it occurs. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of dietary thyme on the absorptive surface of small intestinal villi in broiler chickens with ascites.
