Grafting is an effective method for preserving walnut genotypes, however, rate of graft success of walnut is not satisfactory. This study was carried out to optimize walnut early grafting by evaluating different rootstock types (dwarf and vigorous genotypes), four cover types of graft union (perlite, sawdust, coco-peat and perlite at 1:1 ratio, and control without cover), and two epicotyl grafting procedures described by Gandev-Arnaudov and Frutos. Grafting success and callusing quality were recorded three weeks after grafting. Growth parameters of the grafted plants including number and length of the internodes, height and diameter of scion and survival rate, were measured 150 days after grafting. Between the two grafting procedures, Frutos method was found more effective. The dwarfing rootstock showed better results compared to the vigorous one. Among the three covers used for graft union beside control, sawdust proved to be the best cover. In conclusion, performing walnut epicotyl grafting according to Frutos procedure by using dwarfing genotypes as rootstock and covering the graft union with sawdust was suggested to obtain maximum growth and propagation efficiency.
