Synthesis of heat integrated multi-component distillation systems is complex due to its huge
search space for structural combination and optimization computation. To provide a systematic
approach and tools for synthesis design and retrofits of distillation systems, a new method for
creation of heat integration among columns and solving the objective function by a new stochastic
method, improved harmony search algorithm, is presented. This paper describes the quick method
for synthesis of heat integrated distillation column sequences and IHS-based optimization strategy
for optimization of separation sequences with their heat integration. Four examples are presented.
