In this study indentation technique is used to stress measurement in a quenched and annealed cylinders using experimental and finite element study. In the first part of the study penetration depth-indentation load curves for tensile and compressive residual stresses by numerical simulation are studies. Then the influences of some parameters such as yield strength and work hardening exponent are studied. For experimental study, a 316L annealed steel cylinder was used. Then the p-h curves are obtained for the results of experimental investigation of annealed cylinder in comparison with results of finite element study of the simulated sample in free stress condition. It is shown that they are in good agreement with each other. After polishing and making the surface of the cylinder smooth, several indentation tests are done and results for some points at the surface of annealed cylinder. The last part of this study related to estimation of residual stress in a quenched cylinder in equi-biaxial stress state. Finally the obtained experimental and numerical results of this study are compared with results of deep hole drilling method.
