This study investigates mixed-mode fracture behavior of polyester resin containing fumed silica (nano particles of silica) and evaluates fracture toughness of this material by experimental works and numerical analysis. Fumed silica is an important additive for resins that promotes some of their main mechanical characteristics. Experiments were applied on butterfly Arcan specimens. Specimens were fixed in Arcan fixture and loaded in seven different angles from 0° to 90° (with 15° intervals) and critical loads were obtained. Using numerical analysis, values of stress intensity factors (KI and KII) and energy release rates (GI and GII) were calculated for pure mode-I, pure mode-II and wide range of mixed modes. These processes were repeated for five various crack lengths and results exhibited in tables and graphs.
