In this study the mechanical properties of bone cement (CEMEX RX, TECRES Company, Italy) were measured by nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests. The bone cement sample was prepared using two different mixing methods i.e., hand mixing (HM) and vacuum mixing (VM). For this purpose, some cubic CEMEX RX specimens, each of the size 10*10*5 mm were produced and then the nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests were applied on both HM and VM specimens by nano-indenter setup and atomic force microscopy (AFM) observation. The mechanical properties obtained from this study are in good agreement with the results of macro-scale test methods which have been previously performed on CEMEX RX samples of less porosity. Since the nano-indentation and nano-scratch test methods need less sample material, decrease costs and obtain reliable results in comparison with the macroscale test methods, they can be considered as suitable techniques for determination of the mechanical properties of bone cements. Using a t-test, the mechanical properties obtained from the HM and VM cements were compared. The results indicate that the VM cement has better mechanical properties compared with the HM ones.
