Cancer is one of the main and important problems of public health in the world, that this disease has affected people at all ages. So far, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the most common ways of treating cancer, but these treatments are generally accompanied side effects. Thus, there is needed the alternative treatments that one of the alternative treatments can be probiotics. Probiotic is defined as live microorganisms which, when administered in enough amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are the most prominent probiotic bacteria, which have been received increasing research care in cancer’s prevention and treatment. Laboratory studies confirm lactobacilli exerted protective effects anti-cancer. Therefore, the objective of this study was to screen probiotic bacteria isolated from Kerman food as an alternative treatment for cancer.
In this study, 40 lactobacillus strains were isolated from milk and yogurt Kerman that 4 Lactobacillus strains tested for anti-cancer effects. Bacteria were killed by heat then heat-killed bacterial cells of 4 Lactobacillus strains (1×10^8 CFU mL^-1) were tested in vitro for inhibition on breast cancer cell line MCF-7 for 24 and 48 hours using MTT(3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay.
Our results show that the heat-killed bacterial cells of the 4 Lactobacillus strains could inhibit the growth of MCF-7 cells and inhibition increased with the passage of time. in this study, it was shown that Lactobacilli addition to beneficial effects on the body; however, they effectively suppress the cancer.
