A Cultural-Semiotic Approach towards the Persian Translation of the A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

This present research studieda portrait of the Artist as Young Man by James Joyce between English and Persian from cultural-semiotic point of view.The symbols used in the novel were analyzed and their meanings were evaluated in Persian language from cultural-semiotic perspective. The qualitative method with an interpretive approach was used. The theoretical framework was Roland Barthes’s semiotic approach and Andrea Lefevere Rewriting theory.The sampling method was based on purposive sampling process of selecting the desired samples and the corpus was Joyce sa portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.The results indicated that culture plays a significant role in the formation and interpretation of symbols and signs in the novel and their Persian translation, somehow, lacks those cultural-semiotic effects as they are in the source language.
