The present research work, for the first time, deals with the crack length effects on basalt fiber reinforced epoxy (BFRE) and glass fiber reinforced epoxy (GFRE) composites subjected to Charpy impact loads. Woven basalt and glass fibers were used to fabricate specimens via hand lay-up technique. The initial cracks were made using CNC machine. Three different ratios of crack length to the specimen width were chosen to investigate the crack length effects on both BFRE and GFRE. Energy absorption was determined for each specimen with a crack of known length and compared with the energy absorbed during the Charpy impact test of the corresponding specimens. The results showed that the crack length had considerable effects on Charpy impact behavior of BFRE and GFRE. The precracked GFRE were shown to be more vulnerable to the crack length increase in comparison with the pre-cracked BFRE composites under Charpy impact loads.
