Generic Analysis of Applied Linguistics Research Article Methodology Sections: A Cross-cultural Cross-linguistic Study

The present study aimed to examine the rhetorical structure of methodology sections in applied linguistics research articles published in leading journals. To this end, 300 English and Persian methodology sections of research articles in the field of applied linguistics by English and Persian native speakers and Iranian non-native speakers of English were selected and analyzed based on Lim s (2006) classification to examine the conventions or moves of method sections.The descriptive analysis reveals that move1 step1b describing the size of the sample/population, and move1step1c describing the characteristics of the sample were the most frequently used moves in all three corpora. In Persian corpus, also move1step1A describing the location of the sample, and move 2step 2a specifying items in questionnaires/databases were present in all research articles. Moreover, results display that there was a statistically differences between the three corpora in move 1 step 1a describing the location of the sample, move1step1d describing the Sampling technique or criterion, move 1step3a highlighting advantage of using the sample, move1step3b showing representativity of the sample, move 2 step1 presenting an overview of the design, move 2 step3b highlighting acceptability of method/s, and move 3step2 justifying the data analysis procedure/s. The findings of this study may help EFL writers to better understand and develop RA method sections in the field of applied linguistics. With being aware of the linguistics in terms of rhetorical structure, students and non‐native speaker could increase their chances for publication and effectively participation in the international academic discourse communities.
