Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biopolymer which is developed in the last century and has gained currency among many researchers and industries. Brittleness is considered as one of the most challengable drawbacks of PLA in its application. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has flexibility, so TPU is added into PLA matrix with the aim of coupling of PLA hardness with TPU flexibility.Melt blending is selected as an efficient method of blending for these materials. To prepare a biodegradable blend with PLA matrix and optimum properties, the blend should have PLA phase domination. Tensile, hardness and charpy impact tests were performed in order to investigate the amount of brittleness reduction. The lower hardness,higher elongation at break and impact strength at sufficient amounts of TPU sanctioned our belief in the toughening ability of TPU in PLA blend but insufficient amount of TPU in the blend caused some weaknesses and reduced the toughness of polymer blend.
