Permanent magnet transverse-flux machines show high torque density at low speed which is the main requirement of applications such as wind turbines and traction systems. This article investigates two novel double-sided passive-rotor permanent magnet transverse-flux generators for wind turbines. The topologies are introduced and operation principles are described in details. The simulation results are used to compare the electro-motive force and cogging torque of two structures. In addition, an optimization is done based on the rotor width parameter for the objective of cogging torque and electro-motive force, using sensitivity analysis.
