Nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressings based on polyvinyl alcohol and egg white (as matrix) and montmorillonite nanoclay (as reinforcing agent) were prepared using the freezing-thawing cyclic method. For creating the anti-bacterial and anti-infection properties in the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressings, honey (as natural antibiotic) was loaded inside the prepared samples. In vitro release of honey from the prepared wound dressings were experimentally investigated. The results showed that the intensity of honey release decreases with increasing the content of MMT in the nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressings at all release temperatures. It was also found that the amount of released honey from the wound dressings are increased by increasing the release temperature. The results also showed that the mechanism of release of honey in all wound dressings is Fickian diffusion. Finally, it was concluded that the prepared nanocomposite hydrogel wound dressings are suitable materials for wound care and they are suggested as novel functional wound dressings for practical applications in treatment of various infected wounds.
