In this research, the Sauter mean diameter and the drop size distribution were investigated in a horizontal pulsed sieve-plate extraction column. Experiments have been carried out using standard systems of water/acetone/toluene and water/acetone/n-butyl–acetate. The Mass transfer direction is from the organic phase to the aqueous phase (𝑑→𝑐) and the acetone (solute) concentration in the organic phase is 3.5% vol. The effects of pulse intensity and flow rates of both liquid phases on the Sauter mean diameter and drop size distribution investigated. The drop size decreased more rapidly with the increase of pulse intensities. It was observed that an increase in intensity of the pulses will lead to narrower ranges of distribution for the drop size. Also, increasing the flow rate of dispersed and continuous phase lead to increase the Sauter mean diameter, which is due to an increase in coalescence rates of droplet. Moreover, new correlations are developed for prediction of the Sauter mean diameter.
