In this study the effect of the characterstics of support used for dehydrogenation of propane in the presence of steam were investigated. Two CaZnAl2O4 spinels used as the support were prepared by mechanochemical (MC) synthesis and co-precipitation (CP) method. In order to study the textural and chemical properties of the catalysts, several characterization methods like BET, XRD and TGA techniques were used. Performance tests were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor at 560°C and atmospheric pressure using steam as the feed diluent. It was found that the support prepared by co-precipitation method shows higher surface area and pore volume than that prepared by mechanochemical method which could be correlated to the severe thermal treatment used for MC support versus CP support. The PtSn catalyst prepared on CP support presented better performance than MC method which could be corresponded to the better dispersion of Pt. The higher surface area and pore volume and the lower particles size of CP support could favor the Pt dispersion.
