Chromium(III) terephthalate metal organic framework (MIL-101(Cr)) was synthesized using microwave irradiation method for 0.5 hour at 180ºC and conventional method for 24 hour at 220ºC in the absence of hydrofluoric acid. As HF is a highly corrosive liquid and it can penetrate tissue rapidly, tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide was added to reactents mixture as a modifier to improve the properties of product. The faster synthesis of the MIL-101(Cr) crystal under microwave is because of the rapid dissolution of the terephthalic acid precursor. The characterization of the synthesized materials were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The diffraction peak positions and relative diffraction intensities of the synthesized MIL-101(Cr) match well with those reported in the open literature. It is observed that by using tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide and microwave irradiation, synthesis of MIL-101(Cr) that takes up to 2 days can be performed efficiently in several minutes.
