The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of 1-ethyl-3 methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Emim][Tf2N]) ionic liquid incorporation on separation performance of Elvaloy4170 in CO2/CH4 separation. Transport properties of polymer/IL blend membranes with different IL contents, were evaluated at 35˚C and 4bar. As defined via the ideal gas permeation test, the CO2 permeation in Elvaloy/35 wt% [Emim][Tf2N] blend membranes increased significantly from 5.81 to 10.04 Barrers compared to pure Elvaloy membrane, since the IL enhanced the CO2 affinity in membranes. In contrary a decreasing trend was observed for CH4 permeation in blend membranes. This caused a considerable enhancement in CO2/CH4 ideal separation performance. In addition, the membranes were characterized by DSC and SEM analysis to inspect changes in their thermal and physical properties, accurately. SEM and DSC analysis demonstrate more flexible structure for blend membranes which support the high CO2 permeability observed for these membranes. Eventually, the synthesized polymer/IL blend membranes, show favorable separation performance for CO2/CH4, highlighting the potential of these blend membranes for bulk removal of CO2 to postpone the global warming, which is nowadays a major enviromental issue to the universe.
