In this article, Polysulfone- carbonyl iron powder (3 wt%) magnetic mixed matrix membranes were prepared using dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as casting solvents. The produced membranes were tested with oxygen and nitrogen as test gases to study the influence of different solvents on the morphology and separation performance of polysulfone- carbonyl iron magnetic mixed matrix membranes. The addition of carbonyl iron powders led to an increase in gas permeability of the membranes. However, the selectivity of magnetic mixed matrix membranes were less than the neat polysulfone. Based on the obtained selectivity data, permeability data, and favorable dispersion of carbonyl iron powder in the polymer matrix, the results indicate that NMP is a high efficient solvent for polysulfone–carbonyl iron magnetic mixed matrix membrane preparation. The O2 permeability and O2/N2 selectivity membranes prepared using NMP as the solvent were 3.5 barrer and 4.4, respectively.
