In this work, MoO3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized and examined in the catalytic oxidative (ODS) and extractive desulfurization (EDS) of a simulated oil and a commercial diesel from Tehran Oil Refinery company. The catalyst was characterized by SEM and XRD analysis. Hydrogen peroxide (30 wt.%) was used as the oxidizing agent The maximum 97% of DBT was removed in oxidative desulfurization of simulated oil at 45 C, H2O2/sulfur molar ratio of 3 and during 30 min, without any extractive solvent. In the ODS of the commercial diesel, 72% of total sulfur was removed and the sulfur content reduced from 589 ppmw to less than 160 ppmw at temperature of 45 C, H2O2/sulfur molar ratio of 10 and during 90 min using acetonitrile as the extraction solvent. Only 60% and 48% of sulfur content of the simulated and commercial diesel, respectively, were reduced using acetonitrile as the extraction solvent without ODS treatment.
