Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) technique that involves molecular diffusion and reaction has proved efficient for separation and enrichment of traces of species in dilute solutions. In ELM the mass flux can be improved by tuning the mass transfer barriers, particularly by changing the transport properties of the liquid membrane. In this research, batch extraction of chromium (III) from dilute model media is performed using ELM technique. The ELM is prepared by using D2EHPA as a carrier, commercial light paraffin (LP) and heavy paraffin (HP) as organic solvent, (Span 80) as surfactant agent, and HCl as the stripping phase. Two-component membrane is utilized using LP and HP, and the effects of membrane phase viscosity on the extraction of Cr3+, emulsion swelling, and enrichment are investigated. Results reveal that the extraction rate from the external phase increases as the viscosity of the membrane phase increases. Further, the minimum emulsion swelling occurs when a 50-50 wt % blend of heavy and light paraffin is used as the liquid membrane phase.
