A metal-based ionic liquid (IL) of dialkyl-imidazolium tetrachloroferrates was synthesized and utilized as both catalyst and extractant for the extractive and catalytic oxidative desulfurization system (ECODS) of two simulated fuels and two commercial diesel samples from Tehran Oil Refinery. The IL was exhibited a good catalytic activity as well as a remarkable extraction ability for desulfurization of thiophenic compounds at ambient temperature. Two simulated fuels with 1000 and 2000 ppmw sulfur having benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDB) as the model compounds, were investigated in the ECODS process using the synthesized IL. About 100% removal of the model compounds were obtained in desulfurization of simulated fuels during 15 min. The ECODS of actual diesel fuel reduced the total sulfur content of the sample from 589 to 177 ppmw during only 15 min.
