Given the roles of viscoelastic dissipation and adhesion on friction of rubbers, the contribution of adhesion on smooth surfaces is substantial and a large friction force prevents the relative movement of the two surfaces. In this work, a solid lubricant namely irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is added to acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) compound and the resulting effect on the friction coefficient curve is evaluated. It was observed that the saw-tooth curve of friction coefficient commonly associated with the significance of adhesion term is decreased by increasing the PTFE content. Also, the change of hardness of samples was also evaluated by addition of irradiated PTFE.
