Recently many efforts have been made to develop in situ forming hydrogels due to their less invasive nature for the treatment of cartilage damage. However, low mechanical strength of these hydrogels is the main drawback, which limits their application in hard tissue engineering. In the present research, gelatin-capped with dopamine and alginate polymers was combined with biocompatible nano-silicate, for creating an interpenetrating network (IPN) composite hydrogel with improved mechanical and adhesive properties. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used in this research to study the quantitative influence of process parameters, including alginate and Nano-silica concentration on the gelation time and mechanical properties of the in situ forming hydrogels and the optimized conditions (3.4% w/v alginate and 3.5% w/v nano-silica) was introduced for the hydrogel fabrication in cartilage tissue engineering.
