Poly (methyl metacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) containing 30 wt. % methyl metacrylate (MBC30) and
poly (styrene-co-acrylonitrile) containing 30 wt. % acrylonitrile (SAN70) were synthesized
through batch emulsion copolymerization. MBC30 latex represented one month storage stability
while SAN70 latex was stable more than even four months. The higher stability of SAN70
colloidal nanoparticles was, on one hand, attributed to the lower attractive interaction potential due
to the lower Hamaker constant as a result of the lower surface tension of its aqueous phase. On the
other hand, the higher repulsive interaction potential due to the higher steric force as a
consequence of the presence of nonionic surfactant in the SAN70 formulation caused the latex
resistance against instability mechanisms.
