The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of nanoparticles on the mass transfer enhancement of the amine solution for Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas absorption in a stirred reactor. For this purpose, MWCNTs that are inherently hydrophobic were hydrophilized with a mixture of concentrated H2SO4/HNO3 nanofluids containing hydrophobic nanoparticles (MWCNTs) and hydrophilic nanoparticles (MWCNT-COOH) were prepared using ultrasonic dispersion device. Characteristics of hydrophilic and hydrophobic carbon nanotubes were determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Carbon dioxide absorption experiments were carried out using MDEA solution and amine-based nanofluids containing MWCNTs and MWCNT-COOH nanoparticles in a fixed temperature stirred reactor. The results showed that the MWCNT and MWCNT-COOH nanoparticles enhanced the mass transfer, although the enhancement in the mass transfer rate by hydrophobic nanoparticles was much higher.
