Sulfur compounds such as sulfide having harmful effects on humans and ecosystems can be oxidized using chemical and biological processes. The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the chemical andbiological sulfide oxidation and their product distribution in presence of oxygen. Examinations were firstly carried out on chemical oxidation of sulfide at 500-2000ppm where more than 88% of sulfide was transformed into thiosulfate and intermediate products, while complete oxidation into sulfate was less than 8% during seven days. Aerobic oxidation of 500, 1000 and 2000ppm of sulfide in presence of SOB resulted in formation of 90.5, 61 and 35.5% sulfate as the exclusive product of biological oxidation alongside thiosulfate and intermadiate products, respectively. These results show that during aerobic biological sulfide oxidation, chemical reactions could partially oxidize sulfide into less toxic products such as thiosulfate, while sulfide oxidation go to completion via biochemical reactions. Therefore, the relatively fast chemical oxidation should be considered when reporting biological oxidation of sulfide.
