One of the major problems of the biological treatment system is solid separation. The problem occurs when the sludge fails to separate out in the settling tanks that the efficiency of the treatment will be reduced consequently. One of the common types of solid separation problems is filamentous bulking. The excessive presence of Filamentous bacteria causes the formation of filamentous bulking. One of the measure to control sludge bulking is the additives to the systems. These additives can be oxidizing material or coagulant. In this paper, the simultaneous use of oxidizing material or coagulant materials was investigated in a conventional activated sludge reactor. A solution of sodium hypochlorite and cationic polyelectrolyte used as an oxidizer agent and a coagulant agent, respectively. The results of this study showed that bulking controlled effectively when both materials were used simultaneously. This method has high response rate and in the case of using abovementioned additives the decrease of sludge volume was significant that resolve the settling problems.
