In this study, the holdup and mean drop size in the chemical system of toluene-water-acetone were investigated as a chemical system. A pulsed liquid- liquid packed extraction column at a semi-industrial scale was used. The effects of operating parameters such as the velocity of continuous and dispersed phases, the amplitude and frequency of the impact on the dispersed phase of the holdup and mean drop size in distance of the flooding were investigated. Increased impact intensity reduces mean drop size, and thereby, decreases the average droplet velocity and increases their retention time, which ultimately leads to an increase in the rate of holdup. The severity of impact in higher discharges of continuous and dispersed phases has more effect on the accumulation. Also, the flow rate variation of the dispersed phase has a greater effect on the holdup of the dispersed phase inside the column compared to the continuous phase flow rate.
