This paper presents the application of problem decomposition to the retrofit of
refinery hydrogen networks. In this regard, problem decomposition principles are
developed to the hydrogen integration. In addition, a new algorithm is proposed. The
algorithm is based upon problem decomposition principles originally introduced by
Amidpour and Polley in 1997. The procedure proposed can maximize the amount of
hydrogen recovered across the site. This study is illustrated with an industrial case study.
The stages of the work such as targeting, simulation etc. are performed in REFOPT1
software environment. The results show that this methodology can modify hydrogen
networks more effective than the previous approaches.
