In today s world, the game industry has become a vital part of the entertainment industry, with new video games entering the market every day. This industry, given the fierce competition among gaming companies, seeks solutions to enhance and expedite the game development process, to the extent that in the future, even an individual with limited expertise can independently create high-quality games at a minimal cost. A look at the history of video game development reveals that creating a game, even at a basic level, requires a complex process involving various teams, from artists to engineers and marketers. Considering the increasing complexity of games in recent decades, artificial intelligence (AI) has played a fundamental role in the gaming industry. Natural language processing and machine learning algorithms are used for generating narratives within games. Natural language processing algorithms enable computers to comprehend and generate textual components that are part of the game s story, while machine learning algorithms empower games to learn from experiences and improve their quality. The use of artificial intelligence for interactive storytelling in video games comes with its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the storytelling process for complex interactive games, which used to take several years and involve a group of writers, can now be automated using AI, saving time and effort. It also allows for enhancing the complexity of in-game characters. However, it brings about challenges such as the imbalance in game scenarios, limitations in currently available language models, and the need for meticulous supervision of the generated texts. In this article, we aim to explore the presence of artificial intelligence in storytelling for video games by examining existing game engines and systems and analyzing games developed in this field.
