Monitoring Dependent Key Performance Indicators in Maintenance: An Application of Cause Selecting Control Charts

Controlling maintenance indicators plays an effective role in improvement of availability and Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE). Control charts are widely used for process monitoring in the manufacturing companies. This study examines the cause selecting control charts as a method for monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in maintenance and compares diagnostic capability of cause selecting control charts to that of a traditional Shewhart chart in monitoring of maintenance indicators. In order to clarify the subject more accurately, Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) data of a specified machine in a manufacturing company which is calculated in monthly periods is used as an illustrative case study.The analysis indicates that cause selecting control chart has high diagnostic capability in signaling unusual variation of dependent indicators of maintenance and control charts for such indicators without noticing the effect of influencing factors can mislead maintenance managers
